SCORE CONCUSSION AWARENESS

Our Concussion Awareness program is meant to be informative for both the parents and athletes.   Concussions are serious business sometimes requiring medical attention.  The following guideline is intended for information and awareness  on concussions - what they are, what the symptoms, and what you should do if you think you have a concussion.

The information contained in this website is provided for information purposes ONLY and in no way whatsoever should be relied on as medical advice or as a substitute for consulting your personal physician(s) and other health care professionals.  Therefore, any communications and/or information received from/or communicated here within should not be considered medical advice and you should always follow the medical advice, guidance and recommendations of your physician(s) and other health care professions.

Paul VI HS has partnered with SCORE Concussion Program of Children’s National Medical Center in offering a state-of-the-art, comprehensive model of concussion care for the safety of our student-athletes.

This program involves education for parents, coaches and athletes, together with a baseline assessment of cognitive functions and symptoms of the student-athletes. The baseline cognitive testing assesses key areas of brain function including memory, speed of information processing, and reaction time, to be used in the event of a concussion to better treat the injury. The program is similar to the concussion programs used in high school, college, and professional athletic organizations around the country. Children's will provide the educational seminars and computerized baseline assessments for a minimal charge of $35 per student-athlete.

Testing will take place at Paul VI HS on Saturday, September 29th in Room 129.  The clinicians will test 12 athletes with the first session beginning at 9:00 AM.  Each testing segment will last approximately 45 minutes--please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time.  Children's will also attend our first pre-season lacrosse meeting and provide an education presentation which will provide important information regarding the recognition and proper response to concussions.

What is involved?

  • Testing involves a computerized test of memory, speed of information processing, and reaction time; and baseline symptom assessment. (ImPACT)
  • Time Required: 30-45 minutes.
  • Cost:  $30
  • Parental Consent Forms required Click Here

You will be notified of the specific testing and education locations at a later date.  Sessions which do contain a minimum of 12 athletes will be combined to accommodate the clinicians.

ImPACT Baseline Testing - ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is the first, most-widely used, and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system and is implemented effectively across high school, collegiate, and professional levels of sport participation.

ImPACT takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. The program measures multiple aspects of cognitive functioning in athletes, including:

  • Attention span
  • Working memory
  • Sustained and selective attention time
  • Response variability
  • Non-verbal problem solving
  • Reaction time

Given the inherent difficulties in concussion management, it is important to manage concussions on an individualized basis and to implement baseline testing and/or post-injury neurocognitive testing. This type of concussion assessment can help to objectively evaluate the concussed athlete's post-injury condition and track recovery for safe return to play, thus preventing the cumulative effects of concussion.
